Dip Reviews Alien: Fate of the Nostromo Board Game
If you want to know what it’s like to be hunted in a dark corridor by something that doesn't feel pity or remorse and has acid for blood, Alien: Fate of the Nostromo is the closest you’ll get without leaving the atmosphere. This is a cooperative survival game where you and your crew are just trying to complete your objectives and get out alive.
This Game is Pretty Sweet…Mostly
The perfect organism stalks your ship. What are you gonna do?
The mechanics here are built on pure tension. You have a limited number of actions to move, craft gear, or trade supplies, but every time the 'Encounter' deck is drawn, the Alien moves. It is a game of cat and mouse where the cat is ten feet tall and has acid for blood. You have to build items like motion trackers and incinerators just to keep the beast at bay, because you aren't here to kill it—you are just trying to survive it. If your crew's morale hits zero, it’s game over for everyone.
What I respect about this setup is the 'Final Mission' twist. Just when you think you’ve finished your tasks, the game throws a final, high-stakes objective at you that you have to clear to win. It captures that feeling of a plan falling apart in the final act. It is atmospheric, it is fast, and it looks exactly like the gritty sci-fi I’ve spent my life running through.
Why Dip gives it the seal of approval:
True Cooperation: You win as a team or you die as a team. You have to coordinate your movements and share your limited scrap to build the tools you need to stay alive.
The Morale System: Instead of just tracking health, the game tracks your fear. If the crew gets too spooked, the mission fails. It’s a smart way to show that psychological pressure is just as dangerous as a physical threat.
The Nostromo Vibe: The board layout and the art are spot on. It feels like you are walking through the actual ship, with all the dark corners and flickering lights included.
High Replayability: Between the different crew members with unique abilities and the randomized final missions, no two runs through the ship feel the same.
Downside
The downside, if you can call it that, is that Alien is an indestructible force of nature you can only delay. So if you’re looking for a game where you can actually stand your ground and kill the monster, you’re going to find the constant retreating frustrating.
