If you want a game that respects your time and your favorite series, Union Arena is the one to beat. Bandai finally figured out that we don't want to learn ten different games just to play with different characters. They built one solid engine, and then they let the heaviest hitters in anime fight it out.
One Set of Rules to Rule Them All
Union Arena is a tactical, back-and-forth scrap where you are always one move away from a breakthrough or a total breakdown.
The logic here is all about the Energy Line. You have to park characters in the back to generate power, but those guys aren't doing any damage while they are sitting there. You have to decide exactly when to move them to the front to start swinging. Every turn gives you three Action Points, and once they are spent, you’re done. It forces you to be efficient with your resources. There is no sitting around waiting for a miracle; you either have the energy to play your cards or you don't.
What I really like are the Raid cards. You take a character already on the field and drop a powered-up version right on top of them. It’s like a mid-fight transformation that can turn a regular soldier into a powerhouse in an instant. Plus, the Trigger system means even when you're taking hits, you might flip a card that lets you strike back or draw more gear. It keeps the tension high until the very last Life card is gone. It is smart, it is fast, and it looks great on the table."
